What we do

If a pet owner at your veterinary practice needs someone to talk to, they will receive 1 virtual therapy session (on video call). If they feel they would benefit from more sessions, we will refer them to a mental health professional in their community.

Coping with the Loss of a Pet

The loss of a pet is never easy and there is no 'right way' to grieve. Your grieving process is as unique as your bond with your pet. Feeling sad, shocked, lost, or lonely is a normal response.

Some ideas that often help someone through this difficult time, include:

  • seeking support from others
  • maintaining a daily routine
  • creating a legacy in honor of your pet

Talking about the Loss of a Pet with Children

Crying Woman Illustration

Losing a pet can be especially difficult for a child; knowing what to say to comfort them can feel even harder. Below are some tips from author Moira Allen's book, "Coping with Sorrow on the Loss of Your Pet":

  • Ask questions to gain an understanding of your child's perspective
  • Communicate open and honestly including sharing your own feelings
  • Remember their age, age and developmental level defines what they know and how they explore their world
  • Address any thoughts or feelings about the death that are frightening to the child
  • Be honest, if you do not know, it is okay to say that to your child
  • Encourage talking about their pet and the loss
  • Hold a memorial service, ask your child for their ideas
  • Lots of hugs and acceptance, everyone handles loss differently
  • “Going to sleep” most likely your child will hear this from someone. Define the difference between very sick and sick, very injured and injured. Not all sickness and/or injuries result in death.
  • Never imply the death was your child’s fault or the separation is not permanent. As adults, we know the pet is not returning.
  • Grieving is a journey, not process or checklist. It is normal to feel "okay" one moment and crying the next. Allow your child and yourself time.
